The Pyrex Glass Story
Pyrex glass bakeware was first sold in Boston in 1915 after a scientist, working with railroad lamp glass, discovered his glass product was useful for baking. This new product made cooking times shorter, kept baked foods uniform and easy to remove from the pan, and the flavor wasn't changed, as it could be in a metal pan.
Pyrex glass proved to be different in other ways, as well. It was sturdy and nearly unbreakable, being coined the "perfect material" because it was easy to manufacture, clean, and economical. It virtually eliminated the need for replacements. Unlike porcelain, enamelware, or earthenware, Pyrex glass absorbs heat, rather than reflecting it. Not only does it speed up the cooking process, it saves you energy in the process.
In the 90 years plus since its inception, Pyrex bakeware is still made from non-porous glass that won't absorb odors. Its non-reacitve so acid-based recipes can be prepared and baked in the same dish without affecting the taste, and it's oven, microwave, and dishwasher safe.
